Feast of St. Nicholas of Myra

On the SATURDAY CLOSEST to ST. NICHOLAS DAY, DECEMBER 6, the Cathedral celebrates a St. Nicholas Celebration for the children of the Cathedral and Diocese.  The Cathedral Choristers sing, and children from other parishes are invited to come and sing with them.  Children who choose not to sing in the choir are invited to sit near the front of the church, and they also join in the liturgical processions.

The Story of St. Nicholas is read as the second reading, and in place of the sermon, one of our Godly Play teachers leads an interactive lesson with the children in the nave.  Bishop Michael was the Celebrant this past year, and Bishop Nicholas of Myra makes a special visit at the end of the liturgy.

The entire offering is given to charity, and everyone is encouraged to come and bring unwrapped presents for local children in need.  At the offertory, the children bring the presents to the altar for a blessing.  Our December 2007 celebration focused on the Millennium Development Goals.
