Choir Tour 2009
St. Paul’s choristers recently completed a successful choir tour to Boston, New York City, and Washington D.C.
Choir tour began with a 15-hour train ride from Buffalo to Boston. Mother Cathy, Deacon Bruce, and a large number of choir parents gathered at the train station to see the choirs off.
On Sunday, August 2, the choirs sang the Solemn Mass at The Church of the Advent in Boston.
Next the choristers traveled to New York City. On Wednesday, August 5, they performed a choral prelude and sang for the Noon Eucharist at the Episcopal Church Center. During this visit they were greeted by Katharine Jefferts Schori, our Presiding Bishop. The choristers also had the opportunity to sing the 6pm Mass for the Transfiguration at St. Mary the Virgin in Times Square.
The final tour stop was the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (the National Cathedral) in Washington D.C. Here the choristers sang all three Sunday services (two morning Eucharists and 4pm Evensong).
The choristers keep a very busy schedule while on choir tour in order to fit in rehearsing, services, and sight-seeing. Extra-musical events included the Aquarium and Science Museum in Boston, Central Park and Shrek the Musical in New York City, and a tour of the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.
Completing such a successful choir tour will hopefully leave the choristers with a great sense of accomplishment. For some, tour included their first train ride, or even their first time to sleep away from their parents. The choristers made beautiful music in some of the loveliest sacred spaces in America. Our choristers did a wonderful job of representing St. Paul’s Cathedral, and provided churches around the country with a solid testament to the fantastic music program and tradition at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Thank you to the choir parents for allowing their children to participate in this big adventure. Thank you also to the gentlemen who provided beautiful singing and invaluable support: Brad Carson, James Burritt, Ward Hamlin, and Sean Nix. And a final thank you to Wendy Darling and Nancy Stecker, who did incredible amounts of planning, organizing, supervising, and sandwich-making. Choir tours would not be possible without this extended support network.
