Cathedral Canon
The Rev. Brother Blane Frederik van Pletzen-Rands n/BSG is Canon for Children, Youth and Pastoral Care at St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Buffalo.
Brother Blane Frederik is a native of Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. He has lived in South Africa (where he served in the South African Defence Force during Apartheid), England (where he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints), and Hawáii (where he taught English and World Religions at Brigham Young University in Laíe.)
He read for his Master's in Divinity at The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in Manhattan, New York where he graduated with Honors in May of 2010. He was ordained to the Transitional Diaconate on June 12th 2010 at the Cathedral Church of Saint Mark in Salt Lake City, Utah, by Bishop Carolyn Tanner Irish.
Brother Blane Frederik and Scott van Pletzen-Rands married in KwaZulu-Natal in the Republic of South Africa in 2000. Scott works for the Episcopal Church Center in Manhattan supporting the Mission Program Office as website content manager and web conferencing. Scott works from their home on West Utica Street in Elmwood Village. Their daughter, Esmé Camille van Pletzen, lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she is completing her final semester in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Utah.
The Brotherhood of Saint Gregory
Brother Blane Frederik is an Episcopal Religious in the Anglican Communion and is a Novice Friar in the Brotherhood of Saint Gregory. He and his fellow Friars choose to follow a common Rule and serve the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion in both the lay and ordained orders. The Friars live by themselves, in small groups, or with their families. The forty-three Friars from across the United States and in Australia and the Philippines support themselves and their Community through their secular or Church-related work. The Brotherhood of Saint Gregory believes that all labor and life can be sanctified, which is summed up in their motto: Soli Deo Gloria, To God Alone the Glory.
